There are some things you expect to do during a move. For example, you know you’re going to have to pack boxes, but what else does the moving process entail? It can be a surprisingly difficult question to answer!

The professional movers at Arnoff Moving & Storage are here to help. With over 95 years of experience, it’s an understatement to say we know the moving process inside and out!

Whether you’re planning a big move or a small move, a residential move or a commercial move, these are the general steps you can expect to follow when you’re moving, with a few tips along the way.

Hire the Right Moving Company

If you know you’ll be moving, and you know you want to look into moving companies, make sure you do it as soon as possible. The best moving companies can be booked out week or months in advance, especially during the busy summer months.

What should you look for in a moving company?

  • Look for a moving company with the proper training and experience.
  • A dependable company will have multiple affiliations with other organizations.
  • They will be a ProMover with the American Moving and Storage Association.
  • You can choose from flexible moving options that fit your budget.

Update Your Address with the Necessary Parties

Moving isn’t just about packing and unpacking boxes. There are a lot of people to notify about your new address!

Make sure you inform your friends and family of your new address as soon as possible, so they aren’t sending you Christmas cards and birthday gifts to your old address, but updating your address with the necessary parties also includes:

  • Utility companies, like gas, electric, and water.
  • Internet and cable providers.
  • Financial institutions, like banks and credit card providers.
  • The HR and payroll department where you work.

Pack and Protect

You know you need to pack your boxes, and you have to take special care to pack breakable and sensitive items carefully, but there are other things you need to protect during your move.

Furniture can easily get scuffed and dinged during a move. You can prevent that from happening by wrapping furniture with blankets, towels, or special furniture wrap.

You also have to protect the walls and floors at your old place and your new place. Wrapping banisters and using furniture moving pads on hardwood floors will prevent damage to the home during the move.

Transport

Transporting your items is the most straightforward aspect of moving, but it can also be one of the most challenging. Driving a large moving truck is more efficient than taking multiple trips with a pickup truck, but driving a moving truck can be a huge challenge. That’s especially the case if you’re driving a long distance, or if you’re moving into or out of a busy metropolis.

Hiring a driver makes this step a lot easier. If you do decide to drive a truck or a trailer, you can rent them. Just make sure you only rent a truck that you’re comfortable driving, and never back up a rented trailer without practice.

Unpack

The most fun part of moving is unpacking at your new location! Or is it?

Unpacking can actually be very frustrating. Not only is it time-consuming, but it can be a real pain if you’re moving boxes and items all around the house when you’re unpacking. Make it much easier by labeling every box, and only placing those items in that box. With proper packing and labeling, each box can be placed in the room where it belongs. That way, you aren’t opening a box of kitchen supplies in the bedroom and dragging living room accessories downstairs because they were in a bedroom box!
