May through September are the most popular months for a move. In many parts of the country, that means planning for a move in hot weather. Whether you’re completing a DIY move or working with a professional moving and storage company, there are tips you should keep in mind to help you stay cool during a warm-weather move.
Consider Kids and Pets
You’ll have enough on your mind on moving day without having to worry about keeping your kids and pets occupied and out of the way. Board your pet and send small kids to a friend's or relative's house, so you won’t have any concerns about them getting overheated.
Water, Water, Water
It’s always important to drink lots of water on a hot day—even more so when you’re hauling boxes and exerting yourself in other ways. Have a large cooler filled with water for yourself and for the residential movers you hire.
Keep the Interior Cool
Keeping the inside of your home cool will give the movers a respite from the heat. Your HVAC system will be working overtime since the doors will be opening and closing frequently, so supplement it by running fans.
Turning Utilities On and Off
Have the utilities turned off the day after your move and turned on at your new residence the day before your move. If possible, have someone at the new home turn on the AC, so that it will already be cool when you and your local or long-distance movers arrive.
Don’t Push Yourself
Moving is a strenuous task, and packing, hauling, and moving boxes and furniture is even more arduous when it’s hot outside. Don’t over-exert yourself, and don’t try to do it all on your own. If you have any trouble being active in hot weather, hire professionals.
